What is Woodworm?

Woodworm refers to the larvae of wood-boring beetles that infest timber, causing significant structural damage. While the adult beetles are harmless, the larvae feed on wood as they grow, weakening structural timber and wooden furniture. Over time, untreated infestations can compromise the integrity of your property, necessitating immediate action.

Common species of wood-boring beetles include Anobium Punctatum (common furniture beetle), Xestobium rufovillosum (deathwatch beetle), and Hylotrupes bajulus (house longhorn beetle). Although each species has distinct traits, all present a risk to the timber in your home.

Signs of a
Woodworm Infestation

Detecting woodworm early is essential to prevent costly repairs. Typical signs of an infestation include small, round holes in timber, which are left by adult beetles as they exit the wood after feeding on the larvae.

Additionally, fine, powdery dust (frass) around the holes is often a clear indication of an active infestation. The larvae create this residue as they tunnel through the timber. Affected timber may also become weak, crumbling or breaking easily. In some cases, you may even spot adult beetles, particularly during mating season. If you notice any of these signs, it’s crucial to call in a professional to assess and treat the situation. For related concerns, consider our Dry Rot and Wet Rot services.

How We Treat Woodworm

At Insitu, we provide expert woodworm treatment that not only eradicates infestations but also prevents future damage. Our process begins with a thorough inspection of your property, allowing us to evaluate the extent of the infestation and determine the best course of action. We employ industry-approved insecticides and preservatives to eliminate both larvae and adult beetles, preventing further damage. In cases of severe infestations that have compromised the structural integrity of the timber, we may recommend timber replacement or additional support.

Once the infestation is under control, we address underlying conditions, such as moisture or poor ventilation, that may have contributed to the issue. This approach helps prevent re-infestation, and we can offer solutions for improving your property’s ventilation and moisture control.
